Coach Benny Dees' 1964 men's basketball team enjoyed a magical season, capturing the state championship in one of most impressive runs by an ABAC team ever. The Stallions finished the regular season with a 15-5 mark, 14-3 in the conference. Seeded third in the state tournament held in Statesboro, ABAC demolished Armstrong State in the first round 64-43. In the second, the Stallions disposed of Augusta 80-72. Gwendell McSwain led ABAC's scoring efforts in the first two rounds, scoring 13 and 25 points respectively. in the semifinals, Young Harris fell victim to the smoking Stallions, 71-65. Tommy Dial led the way with 28 points. Dial peaked at the right time as his hot hand extended in the title game, a 76-58 win over Columbus in which Dial hit 11 of 16 shots and finished with 27 points. Dial was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while McSwain and Jimmy Scearce made the all-tournament team. It was the first state title for the Stallions in basketball since Coach Bruce Gressette's team won the 1949 state title. Other members of the team were Cook Holliday, Jake Popham, Russell Popham, N.J. Tippens, Ronnie Archer, Peter Dees, Tyron Spearman, Bill Mathis, Maury Long, Jimmy Fountain, and J.E. Griffis.
