ABAC baseball heads to Taylor University for regionals

TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's NAIA regionals baseball stop in the national tournament is Upland, Ind., and Taylor University. The Stallions learned their regional location Wednesday afternoon in the NAIA Baseball Selection Show.

First-round play begins May 11 with ABAC, the No. 2 team in the bracket, facing off against No. 3 Indiana Tech. They are in a five-team bracket along with No. 5 Shawnee State (Ohio), No. 4 Mount Mercy (Iowa) and No. 1 Taylor.

Taylor is the NAIA's top-ranked team in the last poll of the regular season. The Trojans, who won the Crossroads League, have a record of 49-5 and a 20-1 mark at home.

First-round play takes place May 11-14. The winner at each host site advances to the Baseball National Championship, which is to take place May 22-30 at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.

First-round opponent for the Stallions, Indiana Tech, is 41-5 after falling in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference finals.

ABAC automatically qualified for nationals after finishing second in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament last Saturday. They are playing in their second national tournament in their second season of NAIA competition; last year, they qualified with an at-large bid.

The Stallions rose to No. 17 in the NAIA standings last week. Their season has been excellent in other ways. ABAC has won a school-record 39 games this season, breaking their mark of 38 from a year ago. Before then, the record was 35, set in 1997. Before the loss to Loyola, they had won 13 consecutive games, the longest win streak in more than a decade.
