Baseball, softball host SSAC games this weekend

Coming off of a five-win week, the ABAC Stallion baseball team will look to keep the momentum going this weekend with another Southern States Athletic Conference series at Stallion Field.

The Stallions will host Middle Georgia State University for three games beginning with a 4 p.m. game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. ABAC swept a three-game series against Blue Mountain Christian over the weekend, moving the Stallions into fourth place in the SSAC standings. The Stallions' remaining four SSAC series are against teams that are below them in the standings.

ABAC got strong pitching from juniors Trypp Lumpkin, Kade Haywood, and Reigh Jordan against the Toppers. Lumpkin, who leads the conference in strikeouts with 51, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning in ABAC's 4-3 win on Friday. Haywood allowed only six hits in a 13-1 win Saturday while Jordan struck out nine batters over seven innings in a 7-5 win in the finale.

Haywood is second behind Lumpkin among conference strikeout leaders with 44 while Jordan is tied for eighth with 37. Offensively, freshman first baseman Cris Walley continues to put up big power numbers. He hit three home runs in the Blue Mountain series and added another on Tuesday against Florida Memorial, giving him 14 for the year. That total leads the conference and he is tied for third in the nation's NAIA home run race.

Shortstop Quentin Rawls also stole five bases last week, giving him 17 on the year and he has yet to be thrown out. Ironically, the nation's leading base stealer, Blue Mountain's Hayden Redding, came into the ABAC series with 35 steals but got none against the Stallions. Sophomore right fielder Brayden Fordham leads the Stallions in hitting at .406.

The Fillies softball team had a tough road trip last weekend, playing two teams ranked in the nation's top 25. They dropped a pair of games Friday to Mobile and lost Saturday's opener against 17th-ranked William Carey before dominating the second game in a 9-0 win. ABAC scored all of its runs in a huge second inning while freshman Tess Rollins enjoyed her best outing of the year, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Sophomore catcher Ava Roland was outstanding at the plate, going 5-for-9 in the weekend's four games.

The Fillies will return home this weekend for the first time since March 1 with a pair of conference doubleheaders. They will host Blue Mountain Christian Friday at 2 & 4 p.m. before taking on Tennessee Southern Saturday at 12 & 2 p.m. ABAC is 6-14 overall and 4-8 in the SSAC.

ABAC's men's and women's tennis teams will get their first taste of conference competition this weekend as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to play Loyola (La.) University Friday and William Carey University Saturday.
