The ABAC baseball and softball teams will wrap up their regular seasons this week, while the Stallion golf team participates in its first Southern States Athletic Conference tournament.
Sonny Skinner's golf team will begin play Tuesday in the tournament at the RTJ Golf Trail at Cambrian Ridge course in Greenville, Ala. The Stallion team will consist of Alex Hays, Wheeler Ryan, Aren Flanders, Sebastian Gonzalez, and Stewart Rustin while Whit Hayes will participate in the individual competition. Defending NAIA national champion Dalton State College is the favorite in the event as the Roadrunners have won eight of the last nine conference titles. Other teams participating include Blue Mountain Christian, Brewton-Parker, Faulkner, Loyola, Mobile, Point, Tennessee Southern, and William Carey. The championship runs through Wednesday.
The ABAC baseball team wraps up its inaugural SSAC regular season by hosting the Thomas University Night Hawks in a three-game set. The series will begin with a single game Friday at 5 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Stallion Field. ABAC is fourth in the conference at 15-12, one game ahead of Middle Georgia and two games ahead of Mobile. Middle Georgia hosts Brewton-Parker this weekend while Mobile travels to Faulkner as all teams end their regular seasons.
ABAC, 29-14 overall after sweeping three games from Toccoa Falls College in a non-conference series last weekend, has played Thomas twice this season in non-conference games. The Stallions won 5-2 in Tifton in February before topping the Night Hawks 12-5 in Thomasville two weeks ago. The top eight conference teams qualify for next week's SSAC tournament, and Thomas is currently eighth. The tournament, which will be played in Jackson, Tenn., begins Wednesday, April 30 with the championship game set for Saturday, May 3.
ABAC's softball Fillies will host Georgia Gwinnett, ranked ninth in the country, for a doubleheader Wednesday at 3 & 5 p.m. before wrapping up the regular season Saturday against Thomas University with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Fillies are 9-16 in their first season of SSAC play,while Thomas is in second place in the conference at 14-8. Last Saturday, ABAC lost a pair of games to Middle Georgia, who is 23-1 in the conference and at the top of the SSAC standings.
Next week, ABAC will play in the SSAC tournament in Decatur, Ala., beginning Thursday, May 1. ABAC is one-half game behind Blue Mountain Christian and could move to ninth place depending on this weekend's results.
