Baseball returns home, softball back on the road this week

The ABAC baseball team will return home this weekend after an extended road trip for an important Southern States Athletic Conference Series at Stallion Field.

The Stallions are 16-9 overall and 8-7 in the SSAC after dropping two of three games to 13th-ranked Faulkner University last weekend in Montgomery. Tuesday, ABAC will be on the road in Jacksonville, Fla. to play Florida Memorial at 2 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. matchup with host Trinity Baptist. Florida Memorial, an NAIA school from Miami, is 10-10 this year while Trinity Baptist, who plays in the National Christian College Athletic Association, is 14-9.

Friday, the Stallions will return home for the first time since March 1 to face league rival Blue Mountain Christian. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. followed by a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. The Toppers from Blue Mountain, Miss. are 16-11 overall and 9-6 in league play after sweeping three games from Thomas University this weekend.

As the season progresses, conference games become more important since the top eight of the SSAC's 11 baseball programs will qualify for the league tournament beginning April 30 in Jackson, Tenn. Currently, ABAC is sixth in the SSAC while Blue Mountain is fourth. After this weekend, ABAC will have four conference series remaining and three are against programs currently below the Stallions in the league standings.

Individually, Stallion freshman first baseman Cris Walley added another home run to his season total against Faulkner on Sunday and is tied for the SSAC lead with 10. He is also fifth in the conference with 35 RBIs. Junior pitcher Trypp Lumpkin had another stellar outing against the Eagles and now leads the league in strikeouts with 45. The Toppers have a strong ace as well in Benji Webb who is 5-1 on the season while senior outfielder Hayden Redding has been a terror on the basepaths. He leads the SSAC with 35 stolen bases and has only been thrown out once this year.

The Fillies softball team dropped a pair of games to Thomas University Saturday and will stay on the road this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders. They will be in Mobile to face the 22nd ranked Lady Rams on Friday before traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss. for two games against William Carey on Saturday.

ABAC is 5-11 on the season and 3-5 in conference play, placing the Fillies in eighth place among the league's 10 programs. Mobile is 5-3 and in fourth place in the SSAC while William Carey is 4-2 in the conference and in second place behind league leader Middle Georgia State.

Sophomore Alli Eidson leads the Fillies with a .360 batting average. She is tied for 10th in the league in RBIs (15) and doubles (4) and is tied for the league lead in triples (2).

The Stallion golf team won the Island Pointe Intercollegiate tournament last week in Kodak, Tenn. with freshman Wheeler Ryan finishing third in the individual standings. ABAC's golfers will have some off time as their next competition will be in the SSAC tournament to be held on April 22-24 at the Robert Trent Jones course at Cambrian Ridge in Greenville, Ala.

ABAC's men's and women's tennis teams are also off this week. They will both return to action when they face league foes Loyola University and William Carey on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29. Both matches will be played in Montgomery, Ala.'s Lagoon Park.
