MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College sports a 23-9 record overall, a No. 24 ranking in the current GoRout NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, and are in second place in the Southern States Athletic Conference at 8-4. The Stallions have won their last three SSAC series and, now, they have not just one conference Player of the Week, but two.
Kade Haywood was voted SSAC Pitcher of the Week Monday, March 23, and
Dylan Davis earned Player of the Week.
"These two individuals compete on a daily basis and put our team in a position to be successful," said head coach
Blake Williams. "I'm very excited and proud of Kade and Dylan for a big weekly honor. Big things ahead for these two."
Haywood threw a complete game, 9-inning shutout against Thomas University Friday, a 4-1 victory for ABAC. The Night Hawks' sole run was unearned and Haywood struck out 3 on 104 pitches. Thomas had two on, two out and the tying run up in the bottom of the 9th, but Haywood got the batter to ground out to preserve the victory.
Davis, a right fielder, hit, hit and hit some more over the five games of the week for the Stallions. As the Stallions went 4-1, Davis hit .350 and slugged .850, he had 7 hits - 5 going for extra bases - 2 homers and 9 runs batted in. He had at least one hit in every game of the five and at least RBI in all but one of the contests.
This was the first time either has been honored in an SSAC Player of the Week category.
For the year, Davis is hitting .322 with 7 home runs, 31 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .610. Eighteen of his 38 hits have gone for extra bases. He is tied for second in SSAC in RBIs; teammate
Quinten Rawls leads. He, Rawls and
Cameron Campbell are tied for third in home runs. All are only one off the SSAC leaders.
Haywood has an ERA of 2.47 for the season and is tied with
Reigh Jordan for team lead in wins at 5. He has 40 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings. The innings pitched also leads the SSAC.
All ABAC spring sports have had at least one weekly honor from the SSAC this year. Davis is the first time a Stallion has won for hitting prowess; last year, their first in the SSAC,
Trypp Lumpkin twice won Pitcher of the Week.
ABAC takes on old rival Middle Georgia State today at 3 p.m. in a single, non-conference contest. Friday, the Stallions begin a three-game series with Faulkner University, who has received votes in the national NAIA Poll. A single game is set for Friday at 5 p.m. There will be a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
