ABAC teams enjoy great weekend, hit road this week

If a perfect sports day could possibly exist for ABAC Athletics, Saturday would have been tough to beat.

With the backdrop of gorgeous weather, the Stallion baseball team won its sixth consecutive game and swept its first Southern States Athletic Conference baseball series by topping the University of Mobile 15-12. The win put the Stallions at 6-3 in the SSAC, good enough for fourth place in the league. Meanwhile next door, the Fillies softball team got an extra-inning come-from-behind 4-3 win over league rival Point University in the opening game of their doubleheader before rallying again with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. It also marked the first SSAC sweep in the team's rookie year in the conference, and the Fillies are now 3-3 in the league, tied for sixth place.

Away from campus, Matt Rogel's Stallion tennis team defeated Belmont Abbey, a Division II school from North Carolina, 4-3 in a match in Columbus. Both tennis teams were also in action Sunday at the ABAC Courts. Cumberland University from Tennessee swept ABAC, winning both matches by a 5-2 margin.

This week, most of ABAC's actions will happen away from home. The Stallion baseball team will be at home Tuesday, hosting Paine College at 3 p.m. Last week in Augusta, ABAC swept Paine 14-3 and 13-9. On Friday, the Stallions will have their longest road trip of the year when they head to New Orleans to face Loyola University in another SSAC series. Friday's doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. before a single game Saturday at 2 p.m.

Coming off a first-place finish in their Spring Invitational played last Monday and Tuesday at Spring Hill Country Club, Coach Sonny Skinner's Stallion golf team will be in Newnan Monday and Tuesday to play in the Spring Skyhawk Invitational hosted by conference rival Point University. ABAC enters the week ranked 44th nationally in the latest NAIA rankings. Other participants in this week's tournament that are ranked nationally are Faulkner University (18th), Southeastern University (19th), SCAD Atlanta (27th), Webber International (30th), Point (37th), and Talladega College (58th). Also in the field are two junior colleges -  Vincennes University and Lake Sumter State College.

The ABAC tennis teams will jump back into conference play this week with a trip on Friday to Macon to take on Middle Georgia State. The men's tennis team will also play Sunday at home against Southeastern University at 1 p.m.
