GREENVILLE, Ala. - The third day on the greens was Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's best at the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament, but the Stallions held steady to finish 7th as a team.
Dalton State finished at +19 to win its fourth consecutive state championship, and sixth in the last seven SSAC championship tournaments. Jacob Joseph of Point and Jack Brockie of Tennessee Southern tied for the individual low medalist, each at -2.
Landon Lyon, an ABAC golfer playing as an independent, had the best finish of anyone from the team, tied for 11th at +8. Lyon turned in scores of +3, +4 and a final day +1 to jump four spots on the leaderboard from Tuesday.
For those counting towards the team score,
Stewart Rustin tied for 16th at +11.
Wheeler Ryan's +14 saw him tie for 26th as an individual.
The Stallions' front 9 Wednesday was especially impressive. Including Lyon and
Daniel Harkins - also playing independently - the seven green and gold golfers combined for 18 birdies. Six of the seven birdied the No. 7 par-5.
Over the first 9 holes, Ryan was at -3 and
Jesse Jones at -1. Rustin,
Aren Flanders, Lyon and Harkins all shot par.
Aaron Stocks had four birdies in his first six holes of the back 9. Rustin and Lyon birdies twice from 10-18.
While the back 9 were not as kind to the stallions, Lyon was at +1 and Ryan, Stocks and Harkins were +2.
Overall Wednesday, ABAC's individual scores at the par-72 RTJ Golf Trail at Cambrian Ridge: Ryan (74, +2); Stocks (74, +2); Rustin (75, +3); Flanders (77, +5); Jones (78, +6); Lyon (73, +1); and Harkins (74, +2).
