KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The ABAC Stallion golf team enjoyed a strong second round and won the Island Pointe Intercollegiate golf tournament on Friday.
Coach
Sonny Skinner's squad posted a second-day score of 300, 12-over-par, and an 11-stroke improvement from Round One, for a two-day score of +35. The Stallions were second after the first day but overcame Indiana Tech to claim the tournament win. Indiana Tech carded a +19 score of 307 for the second round and finished six strokes behind ABAC for second place at +41.
ABAC freshman
Wheeler Ryan shot 74 on Friday to finish at +7 for the event, good for third place. The rest of the Stallions' scoring for both days came from
Sebastian Gonzalez (+9, tied for 5
th),
Aren Flanders (+10, 7
th),
Nicholas Browning (+14, tied for 13
th), and
Sam Surratt (+17, tied for 19
th). The top four scores for each team counted toward the team total.
In the second round, Flanders matched Ryan with a 74 while Surratt had a 75, Browning shot 77 and Gonzalez carded an 80. For Ryan and Surratt, Friday's scores matched their low rounds of the season.
The rest of the top five consisted of Georgetown, Ky. in third (+57), William Penn in fourth (+60), and Olivet Nazarene, Huntingdon, Ind., and Holy Cross, Ind. tied for fifth at +67. Filling out the 12-team field were Defiance (8
th, +89), Holy Cross's B team (9
th, +91), William Penn's B team (10
th, +102), Olivet (11
th, +112), and Defiance's B team (12
th, +195).
The Stallions' next scheduled tournament is the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament on April 22 in Greenville, Ala.
