GAFFNEY, S.C. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's men's golf team had their best finish of the young season this week, tying for second place with host Spartanburg Methodist in the Pioneers Invitational Feb. 23-24.
ABAC shot a sensational +14 as a team to rise three places on the final day of the tournament. Overall, they shot +40 to finish eight strokes behind Pikeville.
Wheeler Ryan was low medalist for the Stallions, 6th place overall at +5. Ryan's last round was amazing, an even par 72. He was -1 for the day until a bogey on the 17th hole. Among his birdies was a 2 on the 5th hole.
Aren Flanders was 13th at +10. He helped ABAC get off to a strong start with a +2 on his first 18 holes. He had four birdies on the first day, including on the par-3 17th hole.
Alex Hays tied for 17th, rising eight spots on the second day after a +5.
Aaron Stocks tied for 21st and
Daniel Harkins tied for 27th. Harkins birdied two of his last four holes for a Day 2 +4.
The Stallions had been 5th after their first day of play with a +26 team score, but improved by 12 strokes over their last 18. Fifteen teams participated in the tournament.
The Pioneers Invitational was played at the Cherokee National Golf & Recreation Club.
