PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Lady Pioneers from Crowley's Ridge exploded for 38 points in the second quarter, erasing an early deficit to defeat ABAC's Fillies 77-58 in the Pensacola Christian College tournament here Friday.
ABAC led 16-11 after the first period before the Lady Pioneers from Arkansas got hot and took the lead for good. The Fillies played even with Crowley's Ridge in the second half, but the 24-point difference in the pivotal second quarter proved too much to overcome.
Early on, it was a tight game as Shakiria Chaney had back-to-back buckets inside to start the game and a 3-pointer from Miami's Emily Gamon gave ABAC an 11-9 lead with four minutes left in the opening period. Chaney added another bucket before Camiva Starks' 3-pointer gave the Fillies their largest lead of the game at 16-11 with 1;20 left in the opening period.
But the Lady Pioneers opened the second quarter on a 13-0 run. Most of the damage came from Travia Woodruff, who had 15 over her 18 points in the period including a trio of treys. When the barrage was over, Crowley's led 49-30 at halftime.
Chaney led ABAC with 21 points with five rebounds while Gamon and Starks added nine points each. Joi Montgomery led Crowley's Ridge with 20 while Brooklyn Kearby had 19.
