Stallions advance to SSAC men's tennis semifinals

Fillies season comes to an end

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOBILE, Ala. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's men's tennis team advanced to the Southern States Athletic Conference semifinals Thursday with a 4-3 victory over Mobile. The Fillies fell to Mobile, 4-0, in their first-round tournament meeting.

The victory sets ABAC's men's team to play No. 1 seed William Carey Friday at 11 a.m. EST. Should ABAC win the upset, they would face either No. 2 Loyola or No. 3 UT Southern in Saturday's championship.

This was the second time this season the Stallions won 4-3 over Mobile. The first time the two faced off, Mobile earned the doubles point. Thursday, that doubles point was the decider after the teams split singles matches.

Benjamin Ranby-Al and Milan Volbert won 6-2. The other two doubles matches were close and Jules Zanarelli and Luka Blache prevailed 6-4. Artur Lovison and Cruz Yanez had a set advantage, 6-5, when their match was stopped.

Two singles matches went to three sets, with each team winning one.

Ranby-Al dropped his first set 4-6, but came back to take the next two, 7-5 and 6-2. Volbert won his second set 6-3 after falling in the first 5-7, but Mobile earned the third set 3-6.

Zanarelli and Blache had the other singles victories. Zanarelli won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Blache earned his first set, 6-3 and needed a tiebreaker to polish off the second 7-6 (7-1).

Cruz Yanez lost at No. 1 singles and Luis Pereyra dropped his No. 5 singles match.

In the women's bracket, ABAC's roster of only five players was a disadvantage and Mobile earned automatic wins at No. 6 singles and in No. 3 doubles.

The Fillies came close at No. 2 doubles. Denisa Alexie Raducu and Kiera Youssef trailed only 3-4 when their match was stopped. Youssef was also ahead in the second set of her singles match when it was stopped. Mobile had won the first set, 1-6.

Alexie Raducu and Lorena Orsi had their matches ended early after each had won a second-set game.
