Box Score A storied rivalry rekindled for only one season temporarily came to an end Monday night in Cochran.
Â
For years, the ABAC-Middle Georgia basketball game meant a packed house of rowdy fans and games that went down to the wire. Monday at the Knights' Morris Gym, the rivals met in front of nearly 200 fans and the game, the last before Middle Georgia moves to the Division II level next year, was never in doubt. The Knights quickly expanded a 12-point halftime lead and cruised to an 81-56 win.
Â
As has often been the case this year, the Stallions were their own worst enemy, hitting only four of 23 3-point shots and turning the ball over 20 times. Middle Georgia made ABAC pay for those dearly, scoring 28 points directly off those turnovers compared to the Stallions' 8 points off the home team's miscues.
Â
The Knights slowly and methodically built a 40-28 halftime lead, but really took the game over early in the second half. ABAC started the second 20 minutes ice cold on offense, suffering six turnovers and hitting only 1 of 6 shots in the first six minutes of the second half. That allowed Middle Georgia to build the lead to 60-31 and they were never threatened from then on.
Â
Nate Mobley led the Stallions with 11 points and 7 rebounds while
Matthew Mairena added 9 points and 5 assists and
Antwann Brown added 9. The Knights' Trashawn Wilson led all scorers with 14 points. ABAC was furthered hampered as
Xavier Boyd, the team's third-leading scorer, did not play.
Â
ABAC returns to conference action Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. when the Stalions travel to Point University.
