Box Score ABAC's Freshman Fillies have been hampered by a lack of experience during their inaugural Southern States Athletic Conference season. But Monday night in Cochran, there was a real chance that the lessons they have learned would pay off in a big way.
Â
Despite trailing by 13 points at halftime, Coach Chuck Wimberly's team fought back and got to within one point late in the game before falling to the Middle Georgia Knights 76-69.
Â
The Fillies' impressive rally began midway through the third quarter when they trailed by 15. The trio of
Emily Gamon,
Malaja Dyous, and
Camiva Starks keyed the comeback, scoring 19 of ABAC's 20 points in the final 6:22 of the period, the team's most offensively productive run of the season. The Fillies surged into the fourth quarter trailing 56-53 with a renewed spirit and confidence.
Â
Gamon started the fourth with a jumper to cut the lead to one point. Middle Georgia tried to pull away but the Fillies fought back and another layup from Gamon cut the lead to one point at 65-64 with 3:36 left. But the Knights' Zakyria Johnson was nearly unstoppable and scored seven of her game-high 27 points in the final four minutes and kept ABAC at bay for the win.
Â
Starks shined for the Fillies, pouring in a season-high 19 points while Gamon added 13 points with four assists.
Shakiria Chaney scored 12 and Dyous added 10.
Â
ABAC will play its fifth straight road game Thursday night in West Point when the Fillies face the Lady Skyhawks at 5:30 p.m.
