Box Score TIFTON – ABAC's Stallions notched their first Southern States Conference basketball win in history Saturday afternoon at Gressette Gymnasium, defeating Point University 75-70.
The game was a tale of two halves as the Skyhawks led nearly the entire first half before
T.J. Smith's layup gave ABAC a 32-31 lead 28 seconds before halftime. A 3-pointer by Tanner Higgins, one of seven on the day for the lanky guard, gave the visitors a 34-32 halftime lead.
But consecutive layups by Smith, a freshman guard from Columbus, started the second half and returned the lead to the Stallions, who never relinquished it. A jumper by
Antwann Brown with 11:18 left provided ABAC with its first double-digit cushion of the day. A 3-pointer by freshman
Robbie Gilmour put ABAC up 66-53 with 5:39 left, its largest lead of the game.
Smith led a balanced ABAC scoring effort with 13 points while
Tommie Hall added 11 and
Bryce Wimberly scored 10. It was easily the Stallions' most balanced effort of the young season as they limited Point to 42 percent shooting from the floor, outrebounded the Skyhawks 34-31, and were 14 of 17 from the free throw line.
Higgins' 21 points, all on 3-pointers, led the Skyhawks while Jeremiah Smith added 17.
Now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SSAC, ABAC will be on the road Monday in Leesburg, Fla. for a rematch with Beacon College, who the Stallions defeated 88-86 in Tifton on Nov. 9. ABAC returns to Gressette Gym Saturday, Nov. 23 to face Paine University at 2 p.m.
