Stallions clinch No. 1 SSAC seed with sweep of UT Southern

TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College won its ninth game in a row and clinched the No. 1 seed Thursday for next week's Southern States Athletic Conference baseball tournament. The Stallions posted three runs in the 6th inning for a comeback 4-2 victory over UT Southern in the opener. In the second game, a massive two-run home run by Drew Rothschild turned the tied in an 8-4 victory.

ABAC enters Friday's final regular season game with a 19-7 mark in the SSAC. Thomas University fell to Brewton-Parker to be 16-9. William Carey split with Blue Mountain and Loyola was swept by Faulkner.

GAME 1

Days after getting knocked out in the second inning against Blue Mountain, Reigh Jordan threw a complete game against the Firehawks, striking out seven in the 7-inning contest.

ABAC scored first, but single runs in the 3rd and 5th innings gave the visitors a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the 6th.

Chasin Cash got the inning started on a seven-pitch walk, moving to second on a single to left by Dylan Davis. Kam Taylor cleaned up both with a triple into the right field corner and the Stallions went ahead 3-2.

Cameron Campbell doubled off the left field wall and Taylor came in for a bit of insurance.

Jordan didn't need it.

Aided by a big play by third baseman Drew Rothschild on a Texas leaguer, ABAC got UT Southern 1-2-3 in the 7th.

The Stallions began with a run in the 1st. Zack Bowman struck for a one-out single. Cash picked up the RBI with a double down the left field line.

Jordan had to work out of danger several times. He stranded a runner at the third in both the 2nd and 6th. His biggest danger came in the 3rd. The Firehawks loaded the bases with one out. Jordan got out of it by coaxing a grounder to Rothschild who fired to catcher Parker Wallace, who threw to Cash at first for the 5-2-3 double play.

ABAC had only five hits over the seven frames, but three went for extra bases.

GAME 2

The Stallions were scoreless until the 5th inning and down 1-0 after the Firehawks scored in the 3rd.

An infield single by Zack Bowman plated Cameron Campbell for the first run, then Chasin Cash walked with the bases loaded to bring home Billy Girgis.

UT Southern got two runs in the 6th. The slim 3-2 lead did not hold. Drew Rothschild belted a ball over the left field fence, driving in Campbell and making it a new ballgame.

An inning later came some cushion in the form of Campbell sacrifice fly to drive in Dylan Davis. When the visitors scored one in the top of the 8th to cut it to a run lead (5-4) again, the Stallions put it out of reach.

A slow groundout by Cash with the bases loaded scored courtesy runner Trace Hodges. One batter later, Davis delivered a single, plating Quinten Rawls and when the ball was momentarily bobbled, Bowman came home as well.

Kade Haywood with six innings to earn his eighth win of the year. He surrendered three runs, two of them earned. Drew Hurst threw a solid two frames before Tre'von Lee wrapped it up.

Kam Taylor and Talan Watson had two-hit days. Cash and Rothschild had two RBIs apiece. The homer was Rothschild's sixth of the season.
