Fillies honor seniors, win one from Thomas in softball

TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's softball team allowed no earned runs Friday, but could only divide Southern States Athletic Conference softball games with Thomas University. Even with the split, the Fillies had plenty to cheer about as Lexi Metts and Carter Gore were recognized postgame for Senior Day.

ABAC fell in the first contest, 4-2, but came back to win the second, 2-0.

GAME 1

Two errors cost the Fillies in losing the opening game Friday. A wild throw allowed a Thomas runner to score from second in the 1st inning. A mishandled bunt in the 4th opened the doors for the Night Hawks to score their other three runs.

ABAC did have a 2-1 lead briefly after single runs in the 2nd and 3rd.

Alli Eidson began the second by beating out a slow grounder back to pitcher. After advancing on Shelby Smith's sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, Eidson scored on Ashley Archibald's triple to deep right field.

One inning later, Ansleigh Darby made it to second on a play with two errors. She scored on another triple, this time by Kendall Fowler.

Tess Rollins struck out five over five innings over work. Robby Vann pitched the last two frames and struck out one.

The Fillies had six hits, half for extra bases as they took advantage of Thomas' aggressive outfield positioning. Besides the triples, Kinley Snider doubled.

GAME 2

ABAC scored two runs in the 3rd inning. That was all they needed in Lindsey Paul's fast shutout.

Thomas got six hits off Paul, but all were singles. The Night Hawks only threatened once. In the 1st inning they had runners at second and third with one out, but Paul struck out the next two hitters to leave the visitors with a 0 on the scoreboard.

The Night Hawks also had runners at second and third in the 4th, this time with two outs. Paul got a grounder to Archibald at third to end the inning.

Paul struck out six and needed only 88 pitches.

ABAC only had singles, too, but timed them perfectly.

Paul's bat got them started in the 3rd, a single to left field. Shelby Smith walked and with Paul now at second, head coach Mike Reed sent in Emily Turley to run for her.

Kendall Fowler bunted both into scoring position. Kinley Snider singled up the middle to drive in Turley and, with two outs, Alli Eidson singled to left to make it 2-0.

Snider and Eidson each had two hits for the game.

Friday's games were the last home games of the regular season for the Fillies. On April 24, they visit Faulkner University before finishing the regular season April 25 at Point University.

ABAC is now 8-12 in the SSAC standings, good for sixth place.
