TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College vaulted to the top of the Southern States Athletic Conference baseball standings, courtesy of a Saturday sweep of Faulkner University.
Dylan Davis' bases-loaded walk walked off a 4-3 win in the opening game.
Lalan Ellis' excellent work out of the bullpen helped ABAC take the series in a 10-6 finale.
The Stallions have a 10-5 mark, good for a three-way tie with Loyola and William Carey. Standings are so close in the SSAC that six teams are within a game of one another; Faulkner, Tennessee Southern and Thomas University are all 9-6.
ABAC starts the week off with a non-conference game Tuesday at NAIA No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett College (3 p.m.) before a three-game series Friday and Saturday at Mobile. The Rams are 8-7 in the SSAC race.
GAME 1
The Stallions had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but two runs by Faulkner in the 6th tied the score at 3-3.
Drew Rothschild started the 7th off with a 5-pitch walk, then moved into scoring position on
Billy Girgis' sacrifice bunt.
Quinten Rawls quickly earned two balls, and the Eagles elected to intentionally walk him.
Zack Bowman blooped a single to left field and the Stallions had the bases loaded and one out for Davis.
Davis worked the count even at 2-2, then it went to 3-2 and he took ball four to walk in Rothschild with the winning run.
ABAC's first three runs of the game all came in the 2nd inning.
Kam Taylor reached on a one-out error, putting ABAC up 1-0 on a double by
Talan Watson down the third base line. Rothschild followed with a single to left, plating courtesy runner
Trace Hodges. With two outs, Rawls hit a ground-rule double and the Stallions were ahead 3-0.
Faulkner scored a single run in the 3rd, then tied it in the 6th. The 6th could have gone worse for the Stallions had it not been for defensive plays at the plate.
The Eagles began the frame with a single and a triple. A no-out roller went to Rawls and shortstop and he fired towards Watson at the plate who made a tag for the first out.
With two down and runners on second and first, Faulkner smashed a single against reliever
Tre'von Lee. However, Bowman fielded it quickly in left field and made a strong throw to Watson, who again made a tag at the plate, ending the inning.
Lee picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.
Kade Haywood started.
Bowman had 2 of ABAC's 6 hits. Though limited to 6 hits, three went for doubles: Rawls, Taylor and Watson.
GAME 2
Lalan Ellis stepped up big for ABAC in the second game of the day.
Brought in with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the 4th up 5-3, Ellis allowed one hit. Though the Eagles tied it up with a single and groundout, that would be all they got.
Ellis gave up only three hits over the next 5 innings and a single run in the 6th.
His teammates gave him breathing room late.
Up 7-6 in the 8th, ABAC put the game away with much needed insurance.
Quinten Rawls started with a single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch - one that allowed
Zack Bowman to reach safely after striking out.Â
Bowman moved up a base on a steal and both came home on
Cameron Campbell's double to left field. Faulkner got a second out, then the Stallions picked up a last run as
Kam Taylor singled up the middle, bringing in Campbell.
Faulkner scored twice in the 1st after sending eight men to the plate, but ABAC quickly took a lead.
The Stallions picked up a single run in the first when Taylor walked with the bases loaded, scoring Rawls.
Four plated in the 2nd.
Parker Wallace walked and
Billy Girgis singled.
Chase Morrison, courtesy runner for Wallace, scored on Rawls' double. Bowman singled Girgis and Rawls, but was still there with two outs.
That's when
Chasin Cash kicked up the left field chalk on a double and Bowman scored, running so fast he lost his helmet between second and third.
Faulkner tied the game with three runs in the 4th.
The Stallions scored two skinny in the 5th to go back ahead at 7-5.
Taylor got aboard on a one-out error and Wallace was hit by a pitch. Girgis loaded the bags with a walk and Rawls drove in both runs on a double to the centerfield gap.
Rawls went 3-for-4, driving in 3 runs on 2 doubles and scoring 3 times. Bowman and Cash each had 2 hits. Taylor and Bowman picked up 2 RBIs apiece.Â
