TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College completed the sweep Saturday over visiting Brewton-Parker Christian, getting top-notch starting pitching. Bats were hot early in an 8-2 victory over the Barons, then hot late in winning 8-3.
ABAC joined William Carey at the top of the Southern States Athletic Conference standings with a 6-3 mark. The Stallions go to Jacksonville, Fla., Tuesday for a doubleheader with Trinity College, then resume SSAC play Friday-Saturday at Thomas University.
They won't return home again until March 24 for a non-conference game with Middle Georgia State before hosting a conference three-game series Friday and Saturday with Faulkner.
GAME 1
Kade Haywood came just short of a 7-inning complete game victory over the Barons, but had to settle for a 6-inning, 7-strikeout performance before giving way to
Durrah Butler to close the door.
The Stallions scored two runs each in the first four frames.
They started off with a two-run single by
Cameron Campbell in the 1st that plated
Zack Bowman and
Quinten Rawls. Bowman picked up an RBI in the 2nd by driving in courtesy runner
Trace Hodges (running for
Talan Watson) on a sacrifice fly and
Joe Cooney made it 4-0 on his single, bringing home
Tre'von Lee.
In the 3rd, Watson and Rawls got RBI base hits, scoring
Chasin Cash and Hodges, respectively.
Doubles by Cash and
Drew Rothschild in the 4th delivered the other two runs in the form of Cooney and
Kam Taylor.
Haywood cruised along, giving up only 5 hits. He also helped turn an unusual double play, covering first for the final part of the 3-6-1 combo.
Butler recorded all three outs of the 7th, one via strikeout.
Campbell drove in 2 runs. Hodges scored twice as a courtesy runner. Bowman, Cash and Watson each had two hits. Cash's were both doubles.
GAME 2
Saturday's finale was a pitcher's duel, featuring
Trypp Lumpkin against Brewton-Parker's Hayden Berry.
For 6 innings, neither team budged. Lumpkin wrapped up his 6 frames with 7 strikeouts to 3 hits allowed. Bad luck hit reliever
Drew Hurst in the 7th, with both runs scored by the Barons unearned on a pair of errors.
But while Brewton-Parker might have momentarily saw an opportunity to salvage the series, the Stallions got hot, breaking up Berry's shutout attempt with a pair of runs in the 7th to tie the game.
Chasin Cash and
Drew Rothschild opened the inning with hits, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
Tre'von Lee grounded out to first, but it was enough to score Cash.
Quinten Rawls then doubled in Rothschild, squaring the score at 2-all.
Hurst set down the Barons 1-2-3 in the 7th and ABAC kept rolling at the dish, though not without early complications.
A pickoff and pop-up meant ABAC had two quick outs, but things turned around quickly.
Cash doubled on a 3-2 count and the Barons intentionally walked Rothschild.
Parker Wallace worked a six-pitch free pass to fill the bags and
Kyler Cohen came in as his courtesy runner.
Lee walked to drive in a run and give ABAC a 3-2, then the floodgates opened.
Rawls doubled in Rothschild and Cohen to make it 5-2. Bowman added a double, plating Lee and Rawls.
Dylan Davis provided the 8th run, tripling in Bowman.
Brewton-Parker homered with two down in the 9th, but a groundout to Rothschild at third ended the game.
Hurst picked up the win, his 3rd of the year.
Rawls had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Two of his base hits were doubles. Bowman and Cash had 2 hits apiece. Rothschild and Cash each scored 2 runs.
