TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's men's basketball team closed out its home season impressively Saturday. The Stallions defeated Point, 96-87, ended a long stretch of tough finishes that had dated back before Thanksgiving.
Three double-doubles figured into ABAC's victory:
Tommie Hall scored a season-high 33 points and had 17 rebounds;
Bryce Wimberly had 15 points and 12 rebounds; and
Matthew Mairena scored 20 points with 10 assists. And while not a double-double,
Dontae Smith continued his outstanding work with 17 points.
Four Stallions starters played at least 38 minutes.
Playing with extra intensity, the Stallions fought back from an early deficit. With not even five minutes elapsed in the game, ABAC trailed 13-5. Two minutes later, they had tied the score at 13 on a
Charly Guentio put-back.
At 13:06, Hall scored on a layup to go ahead. Unbelievably, the Stallions only briefly trailed once after.
The lead built to 7 on
Bryce Wimberly's bucket, but then the Skyhawks went ahead 41-40 at 1:44.
Mairena sank two free throws seconds later. At halftime, ABAC clung to a narrow 46-43 advantage as Smith finished the half with a basket.
Smith opened the 2nd half with points, sparking a run that saw the Stallions up 55-45 at 16:44 on a Mairena jump shot. Back-to-back baskets by Hall drove the score to 60-47.
Point cut the deficit to 6 at 13:47, then 5 at 12:58 and 4 at 11:28.
Hall and Wimberly scored to keep the Stallions afloat. The lead dwindled to 3 points at 8:06, then Hall scored five straight points.
At 4:59 Mairena made it a 79-69 game by scoring in the paint. The lead was now a cushion and able to withstand Point's last charge. ABAC was 7-of-7 at the stripe in the last minute to come away with the win.
