WEST POINT, Ga. - It's been quite a season of close calls for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's Stallions. Saturday afternoon, they dropped a 97-92 game at Point University, the latest yet in a tough year.
Five times this year, the Stallions have fallen by 10 points or fewer. They'll have a chance to get momentum back in their direction twice this week at home: Thursday at 7:30 p.m. versus Loyola and Saturday at 2 p.m. against William Carey. Both are doubleheaders with the Fillies.
Point was up 42-40 at halftime. Midway through the second half, the Skyhawks were up 9 points. The Stallions immediately went on a run, closing the gap to 72-69 at 7:28 on a
Dontae Smith layup. Barely a minute later,
Tommie Hall made it a 77-75 game.
At 4:30, a Hall three-pointer tied the score at 81-all. Point went up a bucket and Smith assisted
Bryce Wimberly on a layup to make it 83-83.
Unfortunately, the momentum switched back to Point. The hosts scored the next nine to take a commanding 92-83 lead with 52 seconds remaining.
Matthew Mairena scored 7 points in a 9-4 run that ended the game.
Mairena and Hall were among four Stallions to hit double-digits in points. Mairena scored 22, Hall, 20, Smith 13, and Wimberly 10.
