TIFTON – The ABAC Fillies got another tremendous pitching performance from freshman
Tess Rollins in a 2-1 win over Faulkner's Lady Eagles in their opener Saturday before the Fillies fell 5-1 in the second game.
Rollins, a freshman from Warner Robins who played at Houston County High School, has won four of her last five outings, and Saturday's win was among her best. She went the distance, allowed four hits, and did not give up a run until the sixth inning. The Fillies gave Rollins a pair of runs early, and she made sure the lead held up.
ABAC scored in the bottom of the first when catcher
Ava Roland looped a two-out single into short right field, allowing
Alli Eidson to score for a 1-0 lead. In the second,
Kendall Fowler reached on Faulkner's only error of the doubleheader. With two outs,
Ava Maxwell walked and
Laney McGee drilled a single up the middle to score Fowler for a 2-0 lead.
Faulkner threatened in the sixth when Addyson Jarman doubled in Anna Segrest. Jarman advanced to third, but Rollins got a groundout to end the inning.
In the second game, ABAC again jumped to a 1-0 lead in first when
Ashley Archibald drew a bases-loaded walk from Faulkner's Lana Atkins. Atkins relieved Faulkner starter Hailey O'Brien before Archibald's at-bat after
Ava Roland's shot up the middle deflected off O'Brien's face. After the bases-loaded walk, ABAC's Anna Hutchinson ripped a shot to deep left center but was robbed of an extra base hit and at least a couple of RBIs on a phenomenal diving catch from Faulkner leftfielder Campbell Hecklinski.
The defensive gem seemed to get Atkins on track as she allowed only one Fillies hit the rest of the game.
McGee,
Emma Humphrey, and Roland each had two hits during the doubleheader. With the split, ABAC is now 6-12 in the conference, 9-19 overall. The Fillies will travel to Brunswick on Tuesday to face Coastal Georgia for a doubleheader.
