WEST POINT – One of the things that makes sports so popular is that the most unexpected things can happen anytime. The second game of ABAC's softball doubleheader with Point University Saturday is a perfect example.
The Skyhawks, who entered the game with a 4-35 record and 0-19 in the Southern States Athletic Conference, led the Fillies 3-0 at the start of the fifth inning.
Ashley Archibald led off with a double and
Ridleigh Rowell walked before shortstop
Kendall Fowler came to bat. The 5'0" freshman who has starred defensively but struggled offensively this year was the least likely candidate to deliver the big hit, much less a three-run blast over the left-field fence to tie the game.
But the Fillies weren't done. Ali Maxwell walked and went to third on
Laney McGee's single.
Alli Eidson hit a sacrifice fly to right for a 4-3 lead and
Emma Humphrey drove in another with an RBI single to lead 5-3.
ABAC added another in the sixth when Archibald tripled and scored on Fowler's sacrifice fly. After Point also scored in the bottom of the sixth, the Fillies plated two more in the seventh when Eidson doubled in
Elli Bryan and later scored on
Carter Gore's single.
Addison Tyre got the win in relief of starter
Anna Hutchison. As well as Archibald, McGee and Humphrey had two hits each for ABAC.
The opener was not as close thanks to more timely hitting from the Fillies and the pitching of
Tess Rollins. The freshman shined again getting the complete-game win by allowing seven hits and one earned run as she notched her seventh win. The Fillies got their first run on a Skyhawk error in the third before a big fourth inning, when the Fillies added four more. Eidson scored on a wild pitch before Gore had an RBI double and later scored on a double from Archibald to make it 4-0. ABAC tacked on one more that inning when Maxwell singled in Archibald.
The Fillies sealed the win with four more in the top of fhe sixth. Again, Archibald delivered with an RBI tripled and scored on the throw. McGee had an RBI double to score
Lexi Metts and McGee scored on an RBI double from Humphrey.
The sweep gives ABAC an 8-12 mark in the conference with two big SSAC series on the road next week. The Fillies travel to Brewton-Parker for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday before taking on Middle Georgia in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
