Fillies rally falls short, split pair with Barons

MT. VERNON – The ABAC Fillies rallied twice in their doubleheader Thursday against conference rival Brewton-Parker College. The first one was good enough to claim a 5-1 win while the second fell short in a 4-2 loss.

ABAC was stymied by Baron starter Kaylee Odum in the opener, scratching for only two hits through the first six innings and trailing 1-0. But that all changed in the seventh and final inning when the Fillies scored five runs, all coming after there were two outs. The big blast came courtesy of junior second baseman Laney McGee, who blasted a grand slam to give ABAC a 5-1 lead.

That was more than enough for starter Tess Rollins, who was putting together a gem of her own. Rollins got the complete game win, allowing only three hits.

In the second game, ABAC trailed again as the Barons scored all of their runs in the first two innings. Meanwhile, Brewton-Parker starter Natalie O'Neal had a no-hitter through five innings before the Fillies rallied again. And once again, McGee came through by opening the sixth with a leadoff double. She scored on Emma Humphrey's triple and Carter Gore cut the lead to 4-2 with an RBI single. But reliever Samantha Matthews was able to stop the rally as the Barons claimed the win.

ABAC jumps back in the conference action Friday with a trip to Cochran to face Middle Georgia in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
