Pitching leads ABAC in pair of wins over Toppers

TIFTON – The ABAC Stallions got two of their pitching performances of the season Friday afternoon in a Southern States Athletic Conference sweep of Blue Mountain Christian at Stallion Field.

The Stallions used a late rally in Game One to grab a 4-3 win before dominating the second game 13-1. The wins move the Stallions to 10-7 in the league, good enough for fourth place following Friday's games.

While the ABAC bats were too much for the Toppers' pitching staff, it was the Stallion combo of juniors Trypp Lumpkin and Kade Haywood that stole the show. Lumpkin, who has won the SSAC Pitcher of the Week for the last two weeks, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before getting the complete-game win. Haywood had more runs to work with, but was still excellent by scattering six hits and allowing only run while striking out and also going the distance for the win.

As good as Lumpkin was in the opener, he nearly came away with a loss. While the Stallions totaled 12 hits, BMC starter Benji Webb got some big outs when he needed them and kept the Toppers in the game. The Stallions scored first when Chasin Cash, who had a huge day, singled in Brayden Fordham for a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Toppers immediately answered by breaking up Lumpkin's no-hit bid in the next half inning when Spencer Wilson looped a single to right field. A walk and another single loaded the bases before Lumpkin walked in a run to tie the game.

The Toppers scored two more for a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth of the seven-inning game. That's when the Stallions made their move as Joe Fisher, Joe Cooney, and Cash all singled to lead off the inning and load the bases. Webb was lifted for reliever Michael Lorenz and Harrison Childers greeted him with a single to score Fisher and tie the game. Still with no outs, Parker Wallace drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Stallions the lead and Quentin Rawls' sacrifice fly to score Cash provided what turned out to be an important fourth run.

The Toppers had one more chance for a rally of their own and they almost got it done. In the top of the seventh, Wilson singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Jacob Bryant singled to put runners on the corners and a wild pitch brought Wilson home to cut ABAC's lead to 4-3. But Lumpkin finished strong, inducing a fly ball for the third out.

There were no such dramatics in Game Two as the Stallions scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never let up. There were plenty of offensive fireworks including a two-run double from Cooney in the first and his two-run home run in the third, Cris Walley's conference-leading 12th home run of the year in the third, and Fordham's three-run blast as part of a five-run fifth inning.

On the day, Cash led the offense by going 5-for-5 with two walks. Fordham added four hits while Cooney drove in five runs.

The teams will wrap up the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
