TIFTON – There are 21 outs per team in a regulation college softball game. Saturday, the ABAC Fillies proved they needed each and every one of them.
In a conference doubleheader against Point University, the Fillies had a two-run rally in extra innings to grab a 4-3 win before scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim a 6-3 win and a doubleheader sweep. The sweep evened ABAC's Southern States Athletic Conference record at 3-3.
In Game One, the Fillies and Skyhawks were tied 2-2 after seven innings before Point scored a run in top half of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth,
Laney McGee was hit by a pitch and
Ridleigh Rowell followed with a single to left to get the Skyhawks nervous with one out. After another out,
Ava Maxwell drew a walk to load the bases for
Alli Eidson. The sophomore rightfielder from Warner Robins scorched a 1-1 pitch to left field, scoring McGee and pinchrunner
Olivia Britt to win the game.
Eidson had two hits and drove in three runs while McGee also had two hits and scored three runs.
Addison Tyre got the win in relief of starter
Tess Rollins, pitching the final three innings without allowing a hit.
In Game Two, Point led most of the game after scoring three runs in the third inning. Eidson knocked in ABAC's first run in the fifth when she singled in
Elli Bryan before
Emma Humphrey's sacrifice fly to left field brought in
Kendall Fowler to cut the lead to 3-2. The Fillies took the lead in the next inning when they got consecutive doubles from
Ashley Archibald,
Ava Roland, and Bryan to take a 4-3 lead.
Then, Eidson delivered again. With two outs, she laced a triple to center field, scoring Maxwell and Bryan for a 6-3 lead. Sophomore
Anna Hutchison, who went the distance for ABAC, saved her strongest inning for last as she retired the Skyhawks in order to seal the win. The win was Hutchison's first of the year as she scattered seven hits and kept the Skyhawks off balance throughout the game.
Maxwell, Eidson, and Bryan had two hits each.
The Fillies will travel to Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla. for a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
