TIFTON – On Friday, the ABAC Stallions used four big home runs to sweep the Mobile Rams in the first two games of their weekend series. In Saturday's final game, they only got one. But undoubtedly, it was the biggest of the weekend.
Down 11-10 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Stallions loaded the bases with two outs. That was the perfect stage for centerfielder
Cameron Campbell, who launched a shot over the right field wall for a game-changing grand slam. And as was the case on Friday, they suffocated the Rams' offense late in the game and won 15-12. The win lifts ABAC to 6-3 in the Southern States Athletic Conference, good for fourth place in the league.
Campbell's big shot was one of nine Stallion hits as ABAC also took advantage of three Mobile errors which led to six unearned runs. But the Stallions also continued to exhibit a trait that has been evident throughout the early portion of the schedule – resiliency. Despite a relatively young roster, the Stallions have often gotten behind but found their way back to the lead. A clear example arose in Saturday's third inning.
Down 3-1 after two innings, Mobile put together a monster eight-run inning to take a 9-3 lead. But the Mobile momentum was short-lived. Immediately, ABAC struck back with six runs in the bottom of the frame for a 9-9 tie. The Rams aided the Stallions' cause with an error, two hit batsmen, and a couple of wild pitches.
The Rams added lone runs in the fourth and sixth innings for an 11-9 lead before Campbell's big blow gave ABAC the lead for good.
Shortstop
Quinten Rawls had another banner day, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Campbell had two more hits aside from the grand slam and finished with eight RBIs.
Joe Fisher also had a pair of hits.
Tre'von Lee got his second win of the year in relief, allowing two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings and striking out 11.
ABAC, now winners of six straight, will host Paine College in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
