NEW ORLEANS – The ABAC Stallions took advantage of a pair of Loyola errors in the 10
th inning Thursday night and knocked off the 11
th-ranked Wolf Pack, 4-3 at Segnette Field.
The game was moved to Thursday due to bad weather expected in the New Orleans area this weekend. The series will continue Friday with a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
The Stallions were down 3-2 entering the ninth inning. Pinch-hitter
Dylan Davis led off the inning with a single before center fielder Cam Campbell drew a one-out walk. Freshman first baseman Cris Walley, who had a huge night, laced a single to right field, scoring Davis and tying the game at 3-3.
The Wolf Pack threatened to end the game in the bottom of the inning as they got two runners on with two outs. But freshman reliever
Lalan Ellis got out of the jam to send to game to extra innings. In the top of the 10
th, Second baseman
Harrison Childers reached base on an error by Wolf Pack shortstop Ben Harris with two outs. Then, catcher Pierce Wallace's fly ball to right field was mishandled by Garrett Felix, allowing Childers to score and give the Stallions the lead.
Ellis made sure Loyola didn't threaten again with a pair of strikeouts and an easy ground ball to record his third win of the season.
The game was tight throughout as neither team led by more than one run. ABAC opened the game with a run in the top of the first courtesy of Walley's seventh home run of the year. Loyola struck back quickly with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Cole Romero's single tied the game before the Wolf Pack used some crafty baserunning to take the lead. Romero was on third and Marcus Steen was on first when was caught in a rundown. But before he was tagged out, Romero stole home for a 2-1 lead.
ABAC tied the game in the sixth when
Joe Cooney doubled with one out and scored on
Joe Fisher's RBI single to right. The game remained tied until the eighth inning when Loyola got an RBI single from Drew Lee to score Jaxon Buratt.
Starter
Trypp Lumpkin was not involved in the decision but pitched six solid innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out 10.
Walley finished the night with three hits and a walk while shortstop Quentin Rawls also had two hits including his second triple of the year.
