Roadrunners Pull Away in 2nd Half to End ABAC Win Streak

TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's four-game win streak and undefeated record in the Southern States Athletic Conference came to an end Saturday afternoon with a 94-85 loss to Dalton State.

Dalton State held a slim 42-39 lead at halftime, having broken a 39-39 tie with three free throws in the final 15 seconds. A Matthew Mairena field goal had tied the contest at 1:06.

The second half saw the Roadrunners pull away with a slashing offense that attacked the basket on nearly every possession.

ABAC now has a 4-2 overall mark.

Both teams had an exceptionally high field goal percentage. The Roadrunners made 35-of-73 shots (though only 4-of-20 behind the arc) and ABAC went 33-of-66 from the field.

ABAC led only briefly, 9-7. on a Dontae Smith jumper at 15:38. The Roadrunners' lead was at its acme at 18 (90-72) with 2:13 left.

The victory gives Dalton State a 2-0 record in the SSAC standings. The Stallions are now 1-1.

P.J. Mathews led the Stallions with 24 points. Tommie Hall continued his excellent recent work with 19 points. Mairena scored 14 and Smith was close behind at 11. Seventeen of Mathews' points were in the first 20 minutes.

Danak Varun had a double-double for Dalton State: 20 points and 12 rebounds. Qualen Pettus scored 19, Ja'Ron Briggs scored 16, Devin Geiger contributed 12 points and Raylan Barrion scored 11.

ABAC plays ASA Prep in Bainbridge Monday, but otherwise have a light schedule for the next couple of weeks. The Stallions rematch Thomas University Saturday at 2 p.m. in Thomasville, then do not play again until Dec. 2 at Columbus State.

ABAC's next home game is Dec. 6 against Life University.
