Game Recap: Baseball |

Stallions complete sweep of Pioneers

To say that the ABAC Stallions ended their weekend baseball series with Spartanburg Methodist with an exclamation point would be an understatement.

After taking the first two games of the series, the Stallions erupted for with four home runs on their way to completing a series sweep with a 12-3 win at Stallion Field. In Saturday's first game, ABAC's offense was also impressive in an 8-2 win. ABAC started the series Friday afternoon with a dramatic 6-5 win in 11 innings. The sweep takes the Stallions to 5-1 on the season.

The Game Three highlights got going in the third inning with ABAC leading 1-0. Joe Fisher's double drove in a run and, after Chasin Cash walked, Dylan Davis blasted a home run over the left field wall for a 5-0 lead. The fireworks continued in the fourth when Quentin Rawls was hit by a pitch, Joe Cooney walked, and Cristofer Walley launched his third home run of the young season for an 8-2 lead. But it didn't stay 8-2 for long as Brayden Fordham took the next pitch over the left field wall for a solo shot and a 9-2 lead. Two batters later, Cash made it a trifecta when he greeted Pioneer reliever Zach Marasco with a solo home run to left to make it 10-2.

Walley led the Stallions with three hits and five RBIs while Fordham, Joe Fisher, and Cash added two hits each. Rawls, who was hit by a pitch twice, scored four runs. Starter Reigh Jordan earned his first Stallion win, going five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.

The Stallions were equally dominant in Saturday's opener and got a stellar pitching performance there as well. Junior Kade Haywood earned his second win this year with a complete-game five-hitter, allowing only one earned run while striking out nine. That was more than enough for the ABAC offense, which stayed hot through the series. But in Game One, it didn't happen until late. Down 2-1, entering the sixth inning, the Stallions caught fire to break the game wide open.

In the bottom of the inning, Fisher led off with a walk and moved to third on a wild pitch and a Pioneer error. Cash singled him in to tie the game. Davis, running for Cash, scored on a passed ball to give ABAC a 3-2 lead before Rawls, Cooney, and Fordham all followed with hits to grow the lead to 8-2. In Game One, Fordham accounted for three RBIs while Cooney drove in two more and scored two runs.

The closest of the three games happened Friday when Spartanburg tied the game at 5-5 with a run in the eighth inning, eventually sending the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Harrison Childers started the rally with a one-out single to right-center before catcher Parker Wallace walked. Rawls' infield single loaded the bases for Cooney, who lifted fly ball to centerfield for the sacrifice fly game winner as Davis, again as a pinch-runner, scored. Junior Trypp Lumpkin started the game for ABAC and went six innings, getting no decision. Freshman Lalan Ellis earned the win in relief.

ABAC will go on the road for the first time Tuesday when they play Middle Georgia State College at 2 p.m. Thought MGSC is a Southern States Athletic Conference rival, the game will not be a conference game. The Stallions return home to open SSAC play Friday when William Carey comes to Tifton for a three-game series.
