MT. VERNON – The baseball fans in attendance at Game One of ABAC's series with Brewton-Parker College were bundled up and shivering in Mt. Vernon. For a little more warmth, they would have been advised to move closer to the ABAC bat rack.
The Stallions' hot bats erupted for 13 hits in a 13-5 win against the Barons in a game that was never in doubt after the second inning. The teams will complete the three-game Southern States Athletic Conference series Saturday.
The Barons had no answer for ABAC at the plate. The Stallions scored five runs in the top of the second inning and cruised from there, moving their record to 8-4 and 2-2 in the league. Starter
Trypp Lumpkin got his first win of the season while reliever Tre'Von Lee was exceptional in four innings of work.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, ABAC pounced on Baron starter Brandon Russell.
Harrison Childers tied it with an RBI single and, with the bases loaded, shortstop Quentin Rawls was hit by a pitch, plating Cam Campbell from third. Then, left fielder
Dylan Davis delivered the big blow, a 3-run double to make it 5-1.
Chasin Cash kept the fireworks going in the third inning with a two-run home run and he scored another run in the fifth on Childers' second RBI of the day for an 8-2 lead.
The Barons got two back in the fifth inning but all hopes of getting back in the game vanished in the top of the sixth. Rawls singled and Davis walked before Cris Walley's RBI single.
Brayden Fordham and Cash both singled before
Reigh Jordan greeted reliever VXXXXX VerPault with a single to center field that drove in two more runs. When the damage was done, ABAC led 12-4 and that was more than enough for Lee.
The lanky freshman from Lake Butler, Fla. allowed only two hits and one earned run through four innings of work, striking out four.
Rawls ended the Stallions' scoring barrage in the ninth with a solo, two-out home run, his first of the year. Rawls, Fordham, Cash, Jordan, and Childers had two hits each.
Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
