TIFTON, Ga. - Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's Fillies secured their first basketball win of the season Saturday afternoon, shining bright against Beacon College, 98-52.
"We came out of the gate and made shots," said head coach
Charles Wimberly. "We didn't have that lull."
Brianna Wimberly and
Shakiria Chaney shared high-scoring honors with 21 points apiece. Wimberly was 7-of-10 from beyond the arc and scored all of her points in the first half when the Fillies galloped out to a 60-20 advantage.
"I was really proud of [Brianna] getting her shots off," said Coach Wimberly. He reflected back on their first game against Warner, where the Fillies were 1-of-22 on three-pointers. Saturday, they were 13-of-39.
Chaney, helping to lead scoring for the third consecutive game, went 10-of-16 from the field. Both Wimberly and Chaney accomplished their numbers in only 22 minutes each on the court.
Joining the duo in double-digits were
Melody Charlton at 11 points and
Layla Townsend at 10.
Dailey Jefferson was close with 8 points and
Zamiyah Hosley and
Payton Goodin each notched 7 points.
Taylor Frazier secured 8 rebounds, 6 on the offensive glass.Â
"I was proud of our low post players," he said. "They got lots of rebounds."
ABAC hit 13 three-pointers.
The Lady Blazers were led by 21 points from Katie Kolaxis and 15 from Maya Lopez.
"I think the defensive intensity was really, really good," said Coach Wimberly. The Fillies forced 30 turnovers and attempted 82 field goals to Beacon's 47.
ABAC travels to Georgia Gwinnett College Saturday for a noon game. Their next home game is Nov. 24 against the College of Coastal Georgia.
