TIFTON, Ga. - It was a comeback Saturday for the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Stallions, who outscored Beacon College in the second half to win 88-82.
Beacon (2-1) held a 47-37 lead at the break, but the Stallions reversed that in a four-minute span that saw them outscore the Blazers, Â 18-6.Â
P.J. Mathews put ABAC (2-1) ahead 55-53 on a layup. Seconds later,
Chaste Appling turned a steal into two more points. They never trailed again.
Beacon closed to two points (66-64) as late as 11:02 on three-pointer by Ernesto Hichez, but ABAC was on fire, immediately breaking off a 12-0 run over the next five minutes.
"Defensively, we picked it up in the second half," said head coach
Calvin Sinkfield.
Matthew Mairena's 19 points paced five Stallions in double-digits. Mathews scored 16,
Dontae Smith added 14, and Mathews and Appling each scored 10.
Mathews,
DeAli Thompson and
Charly Guentio each had 5 rebounds and Guentio added 2 blocks.
The Stallions were more than solid defensively in the second half. They particularly stepped up big defending Beacon's Tony Wade.
Wade had 22 points at halftime and none after. He was particularly deadly from beyond the arc, making six of his nine attempts.
ABAC hosts three games this week: Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against Thomas University (2-3), Thursday at 7 p.m. versus Florida College and Saturday at 3 p.m. against Dalton State.
The Stallions will also play ASA Prep Monday, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bainbridge campus.
